ManningWatch 2012 Begins Tomorrow With Seahawks On Radar

It’s about as expected as “breaking news” can get, but still difficult to grasp.

Peyton Manning not playing with a horseshoe on his helmet.

It’s weirder then seeing McNabb in maroon, and on par seeing Pujols not in a Cardinals uni or Michael Jordan wearing a Wizards uniform.

It’s hardly an uncommon trend in the NFL, in fact it’s a fairly common trend amongst legendary quarterbacks who switch teams in the latter part of their careers.

Joe Montana, Johnny Unitas, Brett Favre, Joe Namath, all made the U-Turn after so much success with one franchise for the bulk of their careers. The success rate amongst those four was about even. Montana and Favre ended up guiding the Chiefs and Vikings respectively to the Championship game. Maybe another parallel worth mentioning is that Montana and Favre were both shoved out the door to make way for future franchise, Super Bowl winning quarterbacks in Steve Young and Aaron Rodgers. Johnny Unitas also ended up house sitting for then rookie and future Hall of Famer Dan Fouts.

A similar thing is happening to Manning, as the stars have aligned and the Colts are going to draft the next, well, Peyton Manning in Andrew Luck. I won’t say Manning is being unceremoniously shoved out the door because there is no animosity between him, the Colts, or Jim Irsay; but he is being pushed aside so the Colts can start over with their new franchise quarterback.

When it comes to the Seahawks, and Manning, I can guarantee virtually every 12th Man short of some personal hatred for the man would be thrilled if he signed for Seattle. Indeed they have the resources and the boldness to make a move for one of the greatest players in NFL history. If Pete Carroll wasn’t shy about trying to make Charlie Whitehurst his future franchise quarterback (really the only move of his I loathe), do you think he’s going to hesitate to pull the trigger on the leagues only true indespensible player?

The bidding war is likely to get insane, not over exaggerating. The Redskins are going to be involved and the Miami Dolphins seem to think that he’s already theirs. Dan Snyder loves to open his pocket book for veteran “names” and has there been a bigger name to hit the open market? Period?

Lets not forget that Paul Allen is the richest man in football, and it’s not even close, even the Glazers and Stan Kroenke, men who also own European football clubs, pale in comparison. This is something not to be taken likely, as the Seahawks could certainly afford to dump as much bonus money as they desire into his lap directly from Allens pocket, more so then anybody, including the Redskins, if they desire.

Another parallel that’s interesting is the fact that Manning is said to want to play at least three more seasons, well, Pete Carroll’s contract happens to run for three more seasons.

After building, in my opinion at least, an insanely loaded young talented core of players, especially on defense, what better cherry to put on top then Peyton Manning?

What good does it do Pete Carroll by comparison to draft and groom a quarterback who might turn into that proverbial franchise guy by the time his contract expires? Who better to plug in for those guaranteed next three seasons then Peyton Manning?

Why not sign Manning AND draft a quarterback especially considering how affordable the No. 12 overall choice has become with the new CBA. Why hold off another year with Tarvaris Jackson when you could hold off another three on and develop your future with Peyton Manning as his mentor?

These are getting rhetorical, and maybe that’s the point. After tomorrow there are going to many eager fans of many eager fanbases hoping that Manning ends up donning whatever crazy soon-to-be Ducks-esque uni that they support.

ManningWatch has officially begun, and you can count me amongst those that will be glued right in.
