The Miracle of CenturyLink Field? Hawks Win in Crazy Fashion Over Packers 14-12

By Jack Sitt

What a wild finish in Seattle! The Seattle Seahawks faced a 5 point deficit with just 8 seconds remaining at the scoring 24 yard line. Russel Wilson dropped back, scrambled around and threw a prayer to Golden Tate and he somehow came up with the catch against five Green Bay defensive backs. The catch may have been lucky and perhaps illegal (an offensive passing interference should have been called), but you have to love the effort that Tate showed and the poise that Russel Wilson had in the pocket at the end of the game.

The story of the first half was the domination of the Seattle Seahawk’s defense. The defense employed a nice defensive scheme mixing in cover three zones and cover one man. Aaron Rodgers and the Packers were not prepared for this defense and were sacked eight times in just a half of football as a result. When they tried to throw downfield against cover three, the receivers were covered because of the three deep zones played by the defensive backs. When they tried to throw downfield against cover one, the physical defensive backs for the Seahawks blanketed the Green Bay receivers. The combination of excellent coverage down the field and penetration by the Seattle pass rush led to the best defensive performance in a half of football this season.

In the second half, the Packers offense found a rhythm. They were successful in checking the ball down to their running backs when they faced a cover 3. Cedric Benson and John Kuhn combined for 7 receptions for 44 yards in an offense that does not usually involve their backs in the passing game. Against cover one, Rodgers successfully spread the ball around and completed quick timing routes to his receivers. He threw a few screen passes to Greg Jennings as he often was matched up with safety Kam Chancellor.

The Seahawks took a conservative approach on offense all game. They ran the ball 25 times with Marshawn Lynch, and they asked Russell Wilson to make safe passes so that they could allow their defense to win the game. The Packers reacted to the Seattle run game by playing 8 men in the box and Seattle took advantage of this on one play in which Russell Wilson completed a 41 yard touchdown pass to Golden Tate on a double move. That was the only offense they were able to generate for the most part until their miraculous game winning play.

The game winning catch catch was obviously a controversial ruling, but we still have to give the Seattle Seahawks credit for their victory. They managed to come out with the win against a tough Green Bay Packer team. There are not many other teams that could hold such an explosive offense to just 12 points.

Seahawks have probably the best defense in the NFL. People may forget about them because they play in the great northwest, and don’t get enough coverage. I think its a great job by the NFL to get the seahawks national television coverage. Now people can see the great defense that would have been overseen had they not been on national tv. The defense let up a league low 39 points through three games against two of the best offenses in the league; Green Bay and Dallas. They also are second in the league in rush yards against with an average of 59 yards a game. This defense is capable of big things and will keep the seahawks in games. The seahawks can prove Bill Simmons correct (with his wild superbowl prediction) if theyre offense can pick up the slack and score more than 14 points. I wish the best of luck to the Seahawks and I am certainly routing for them and their ecstatic home crowd. I say they go 7-1 at home and 4-4 on the road en route to a 11-5 season.

How can it be considered a well deserved win if it was on a clearly blown call. To their credit the seahawks played a good game but they really didn’t deserve that win by any means.

I never phrased the victory as a “well deserved win”. I simply said that the Seahawks deserve credit for their victory because of their outstanding defensive performance. I understand that the last call was blown, but there were many calls blown in the game in favor of the Packers. In addition, the 60 minutes of football that occurred prior to the play cannot just be overlooked.
