Could Undrafted Rookie Doug Baldwin Reach 1,000 Yards Receiving?

I don’t feel like digging, but back when the Seahawks signed Doug Baldwin, I remember mentioning it was catfight to obtain his services from at least 20 teams. It’s that way for many undrafted players, but Baldwin was a guy I saw analysts shocked he was available lest a draft selection and many had him tops amongst the best available undrafted rookies.

We can certainly see why now.

We all know it won’t happen, cough, Cam Newton… But Baldwin has played well enough to be worthy of mention in the Rookie of the Year discussion.

In an off-season that the Seahawks stole headlines with the acquisitions of future cornerstones Zach Miller and Sidney Rice; the undrafted rookie has quietly been the Seahawks second best offensive player and has clearly outplayed the rest of the receiving unit.

He currently has 718 yards and 3 scores on 45 receptions, 755 all purpose offensive yards altogether.

He’s not quite on pace to top 1,000 yards, but is an average of 94 yards per game away from obtaining the milestone in the receiving category.

In fact, Baldwin is tearing it up so much that he is outperforming many of his drafted counterparts, well, scratch that; almost all of them.

I remember this dude named Julio Jones who cost someone four draft selections to obtain. I think he went sixth overall or something.

Would any analyst have even given a moments thought to consider an undrafted Doug Baldwin catching pigskins from Tarvaris Jackson would outproduce the sixth overall choice in the draft?

Doubt it.

Doug Baldwin is second amongst rookie receivers only to AJ Green, this other dude who I remember going fourth overall. He trails the 4th overall selection by 161 receiving yards; that’s pretty remarkable.

Pete Carroll and John Schneider keep unearthing gems like Baldwin and former CFL castaway Brandon Browner who has developed into an imposing playmaker for the Seahawks defense.

It’s one of the many reasons the rest of the NFL should be on notice, big time.
