Rice on IR; WR Deon Butler expected to be activated

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Sidney Rice will be placed on injured reserve, Tim Booth of the Associated Press reports.

Rookie linebacker Michael Morgan will be added from the practice squad to replace Rice on the 53-man roster. Third-year wide receiver Deon Butler, who opened the season on the PUP list, is expected to be active for the first time this season.

Rice suffered a concussion, his second in two weeks, during Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Washington Redskins, the latest in a series of injuries that have hindered the 2009 Pro Bowler during his first season with the Seahawks. Rice missed the first two games of the season with a shoulder injury (torn labrum) that could require surgery, and appeared on the team’s injury report with foot and knee issues in the second half of the season.

No stranger to injury. While with the Minnesota Vikings, Rice opened the 2010 season on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing hip surgery last August. Rice returned for the final seven weeks of the season, catching 17 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns in six games.

Rice signed a five-year, $41 million contract with the Seahawks in July that included $18.5 million in guaranteed money. That guarantee consists of a $6 million signing bonus, fully guaranteed base salaries of $2 million in 2011 and $7 million in 2012,with a $3.5 million injury-only guarantee on his $8.5 million base salary in 2013.

In nine games this season, Rice caught 32 passes for 484 yards and two touchdowns.
