Should Seattle Seahawks Pursue Cornerback Darius Butler?

This one isn’t being classified as a surprise, not even by the player himself, but the New England Patriots have parted ways with former 2nd round (41st overall) pick cornerback Darius Butler.

I remember watching the game i’ve seen people talking about when he got torched by Braylon Edwards a couple seasons ago that pretty much permanently put him in Belichicks dog house.

As far as the Seahawks are concerned, he would fit the in the youth movement and would be an upgrade somewhere within the green unit. With so little time until the season begins, it’s likely he won’t cost much.

Seattle traded former starter Kelly Jennings, and are high on Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman (as am I). Still, if you look at the scenario plainly, they are entrusting an all career CFL’er to start in week one and asking recent fourth, (Thurmond) fifth and sixth round draft choices to hold the nickel and dime slots.

In reality, that’s a good thing, that’s the way it’s supposed to be (playing your own draft picks), but it doesn’t change the fact that much like the offensive line that after Trufant (ala Robert Gallery) the top four members of this depth chart have a combined 1 start and 14 NFL games under their belt; all of which belong to Thurmond. Roy Lewis also has 14 games under his belt, but is not expected to start the season; even if you include those games, that’s still 28 total NFL games amongst four players, not much at all.

The point is they could certainly use some depth and Butler would qualify as a veteran amongst this group, not joking; he has 29 games and 8 starts under his belt; in terms of experience, he would be second to Trufant.

At worst, he fizzles like he obviously did in New England, at best, the Seahawks may find a young gem of a nickel back that possibly didn’t fit into a veteran prefered Patriots system.

He’s been claimed by Carolina
