Seahawks: Pete Carroll May Give Lofa Tatupu the Boot

Well I know my best friend wouldn’t want this to happen because he has a very expensive Lofa Tatupu jersey, but it may come to pass.

The Seahawks held Tatupu out of practice today to ask the veteran linebacker to restructure his contract.

Translation: You’ll stay on the team on our terms or make less money elsewhere anyway

Since signing a lucrative six year deal Tatupu has been in more of a decline than an incline. It’s unfortunate, I like Tatupu a lot but the statistics don’t lie. Taking one game missed into account from 2008 his average tackle output per game has gone from:

2005-6.5

2006-7.6

2007- 6.8

2008- 6.2

2009- 6.4

2010- 5.5

That last one should scare you because the only exception to the steady decline in production was the 2009 season where he saw his tackle average slightly increase but Tatupu missed 11 games that season with a knee injury. Other than that, he has been in decline since 2006.

Once mentioned in the “elite” discussion. Tatupu is still a top 15 inside linebacker and is more than capable of starting. He won’t find himself starting for Pete Carroll unless it’s on his terms apparently– USC tie be damned.

If he does not agree to lower his cap figure, look for David Hawthorne to slide into his role and Leroy Hill to reclaim his starting gig.
