NFL Cuts: Big Name Veterans Already Getting Pink Slips

Teams won’t be allowed to officially release players until Thursday, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t already preparing players for the eventual ax to come down.

The Baltimore Ravens are the first to clean house, releasing four significant, still productive veterans who even most casual fans in the NFL have probably heard of. The team has told Derrick Mason, Todd Heap, Kelly Gregg, and Willis McGahee they intend to release them.

Mason is the most productive of the quad, leading the Ravens in receiving last season. Gregg is also a well regarded defensive tackle and I wouldn’t be surprised if Seattle was on his radar. Remember Colin Cole was a 3-4 defensive tackle before he came to the Seahawks and Gregg will be one of the better 3-4 types available. It could be argued he would represent an upgrade over Colin Cole. Seattle is probably speaking to Brandon Mebane as I write this, and they may have to brace for his departure. If he leaves Pete Carroll would likely pursue multiple players at the defensive tackle position that lnclude. Aubrayo Franklin, Barry Cofield, Cullen Jenkins, Mike Patterson, Pat Williams, and Tommie Harris.

I wouldn’t expect the other pair to wind up here either, Seattle wants to get younger. I expect Seattle to be hot on the trail of Cullen Jenkins and Franklin, especially if Brandon Mebane leaves.
