Tarvaris Jackson: “Seattle A Good Opportunity”

In an interview with Vikings beat writer Judd Zulag (relayed by the Seattle Times), Tarvaris Jackson was not exactly shy about the prospects of joining the Seattle Seahawks. If you can read between the lines you can also put several things together based on Jackson’s.

Here are some of the key excerpts:

Is it frustrating to be a free agent right now?

Jackson: “It’s just frustrating because when you start free agency, it’s going to be rushed and you’re going to have to make a decision before you want to and then you won’t get a chance to really get comfortable or anything. And when you do sign your free agent contract, you’ll probably sign it and have to go straight out to practice. It’s kind of frustrating knowing that but however it comes, you’ve got to take it.”

Where do you think you will wind up?

Jackson: “I see it on Twitter sometimes. It’s kind of like, I guess they know more than I know. I woke up and saw something this morning about Seattle because Coach Bevell is up there. I know how it works. I understand that.”

Well, is Seattle an interesting opportunity?

Jackson: “Yeah. It seems like a pretty good opportunity. I know the offense. That’s a plus. Coach (Darrell) Bevell, he’s very familiar with me and I’m very familiar with him. So that’s always a plus.”

So there was a good relationship with Bevell?

Jackson: “We always had a pretty good relationship. I worked more closely with coach (Kevin) Rogers because he was my quarterbacks coach. (Bevell) spent a lot of time in different guys’ rooms, our room, the offensive linemen’s room, always going back and forth. I was more close with coach Rogers. He was my quarterbacks coach. But we had a pretty good relationship, me and Bev did.”

When asked about how familiarity will play a roll in his decision making

Jackson: “In this circumstance, with the situation being how it is and it’s so late, if free agency would have started in March like it’s supposed to, it would have been a lot different. But being that it is so late, you would like to go somewhere you’re familiar so you have a chance. “If I go to a new system that I never played in before now, you’re really learning. You’re learning a new offense and just trying to get familiar with the guys. You’re kind of behind the eight ball. Being that (Seattle) is the same system, it’s a good opportunity.”

I pretty much feel it’s a slam dunk for Jackson to end up in Seattle after just reading these excerpts. Jackson preaches that familiarity is going to be key for him in an off season filled with uncertainty and a truncated timetable for getting up to speed. Typically free agents have from the middle of March up until now to get a playbook and digest the new system thoroughly. Jackson also cites a good relationship with Bevell, which reinforces the familiarity tie with the offense being installed here.

Hopefully it’s not as a starter, but early welcome to Seattle Tarvaris
