DT Colin Cole Underwent Ankle Surgery Recently

Seahawks defensive tackle Colin Cole’s left ankle is in a boot after undergoing surgery a few weeks ago, Dave “Softy” Mahler of 950-KJR in Seattle reports.

“Don’t think ill be cleared right away. Hope to be back as soon as they’ll let me”, Cole told Mahler, who added that Cole doesn’t expect to be ready for training camp, and may not be ready for the season.

Cole missed five games in middle of the 2010 season after injuring the same ankle.

Signed to a five-year, $21.4 million contract in 2009, Cole has started 26 of his 27 games with the Seahawks, totaling 92 tackles and a quarterback sack. Cole turned 31 last month, and is set to earn $3.75 million in base salary in 2011.

With Brandon Mebane, Craig Terrill, and Junior Siavii unrestricted free agents, the Seahawks do not have much depth at the defensive tackle position and were likely going to pursue defensive tackles when free agency opens up. Cole’s injury just exacerbates the situation.

The Seahawks have veterans Kentwan Balmer and Jay Alford under contract, and they’re joined by 2011 seventh-round pick Pep Levingston on the depth chart. The Seahawks also signed Barrett Moen, a guard from the University of Minnesota who went undrafted in 2010, to a “Reserve/Futures” contract with the intention of converting him to defensive tackle.
