Will Pete Carroll continue to stick with Hasselbeck at QB?

Sunday once again was tough to watch as a Seahawks fan, as the team lost a divisional game to the Rams, and looked awful in doing it – 20-3.

It was also tough to watch from an offensive standpoint, as QB Matt Hasselbeck was simply terrible. He was just 20-of-36 pass attempts for 191 yards and an interception, compiling a 58.9 passer rating, his second sub-60.0 passer rating in four games this season

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that despite the poor outing for Hasselbeck, he will be sticking with him for the time being. “Matt needs to fight though this with the guys and see if we can work our way through it,” Carroll said.

With those comments, one has to wonder if Carroll has any faith at all in backup QB Charlie Whitehurst, who the Hawks went hard after this offseason to get him away from the Chargers.

Whitehurst has STILL not thrown a pass in a regular season game, and an insider told Pro Football Weekly last week that Carroll still isn’t close to giving him a chance anytime soon to throw that first pass.

“Whitehurst can’t handle the short- and medium-range passes that are such a key in this system nearly as well, and that’s always been Hasselbeck’s strength,” the insider told PFW.

Even with that, how much longer can Carroll stand by Hasselbeck? The QB has thrown four TD’s and six picks, and in four games has a QB rating of 70.6.

If the Hawks are going to challenge this season (they are 2-2 in probably the worst division in football), you have to wonder if it’s going to involve Whitehurst, and if he’s ever going to get his shot to lead a team. Or at least throw a pass in a pro game.

  1. Embarrassing performance yesterday, he’ll have a lot of pressure in standing by Hasselbeck unless he gets better real quick.
