Seattle Selects Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Sixth Overall

We’re well under way in this year’s N.F.L. Draft and with the sixth overall pick Seattle secured a key cog that will fill a glaring need for years to come.

Russell Okung, an offensive tackle from Oklahoma State, was Seattle’s choice.  Listed at 6-foot-5 and 307 pounds, Okung’s strengths according to the N.F.L. Scouting Combine page at are:

Okung possesses prototypical size for a left tackle. Has started at tackle since his true freshman season. Maintains great balance with almost elite feet. Neutralizes the speed rush by setting fast. Shows a mean streak which helps in the running game. Engages defenders with long arms and has the straight-line speed to get to the second level. says his strengths are:

  • Very good height with long arms
  • Thick, strong lower body
  • Extremely high level of athleticism
  • Patient pass protector; does not overextend
  • Great lateral agility
  • Quick kick step
  • Consistent footwork
  • Nice ankle/knee flexion
  • Surprisingly physical run blocker
  • Light on his feet
  • Highly experienced since true freshman year
  • Very durable – 34 straight starts
  • Understands angles
  • Recognizes stunts and blitz assignments
  • Gets to second level
  • Leader
  • Tremendous upside
  • Week 1 starting left tackle
  • Franchise player
  • Potential No. 1 overall pick
  • Okung isn’t perfect though.  The N.F.L. Scouting Combine page on him has this for his weakness:

At 6’8″ he will play tall at times and his height makes it difficult to always keep low and change directions laterally against quicker defenders.
