Posted in Pro Football Weekly reports that the D-Line may be a big need this offseason for the Hawks:
Nobody really seems to know if nine-time Pro Bowl offensive tackle Walter Jones is actually considering retirement, as he has hinted in various Twitter messages since the season ended. “But it’s hard to envision him coming back in the zone-blocking scheme new O-line coach Alex Gibbs has in mind,” one team insider said. “And even if he does come back, they still really need help on the line badly, with (center) Max Unger considered the only guy set in stone at the moment.” That said, sources close to the scene seem to think the team has almost as glaring a need on the defensive line, where the lack of a legitimate pass rush has become a big problem. Pro Football Weekly hears it’s quite possible the team will select a top-quality pass rusher in the first round before a new left tackle, considering Gibbs’ affinity for lower-round players whose greatest strengths are their intelligence and intangibles. “Four of the five players on Gibbs’ line in Atlanta that led the league in rushing for three years were fourth-rounders or lower,” the insider said.
