Week Ten could very well end up being the make-or-break point in the Seattle Seahawks’ season.
At 3-5, the Seahawks only trail the Arizona Cardinals by two games, the two play each other this weekend in Arizona, plus, the injury plagued Seahawks gets back starting tackle Sean Locklear in its lineup after the veteran missed the past six games with a high ankle sprain.
While the return of Locklear could be pivotal in keeping quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and his sore shoulder off the University of Phoenix Stadium grass, the defensive side of the ball is where Seattle needs to place the majority of its attention.
When comparing Arizona’s five wins to its three losses, the one trend that stands out the most is the difference in quarterback Kurt Warner’s play.
In five wins, Warner has flung 12 touchdown passes and only two interceptions.
In the three losses?
Four scores and nine picks.
What caused the Jekyll and Hyde production this season?
Arizona’s ability or lack thereof to protect him.
Warner’s been sacked 16 times this year, but 10 of those have come in the team’s three losses.
In order to bring Warner down Seattle’s linebacking play has to fire on all cylinders, especially in terms of mixing up and disguising its blitz packages.
If Seattle can’t confuse and bring down Warner, look out because he should have his entire stable of receiving talent back this week with the return of Anquan Boldin. Without Boldin in the lineup last weekend in the team’s road win against the Chicago Bears, Warner efficiently spread the wealth, especially to his tight ends. Coming on play-action passes, Warner dialed up both Ben Patrick and Anthony Becht for a scoring strike.
Despite a 1-3 record at home, Arizona shouldn’t have much difficulty against the Seahawks because Warner just has too many big-play threats to distribute the ball to.
Seattle falls 3-6 after the Week Ten matchup, as the Seahawks will lose 24-14.
