Seahawks put G/C Cory Withrow on IR; sign S Nate Ness

Eric Williams of Seahawks Insider is reporting that the Seahawks have placed veteran offensive lineman Cory Withrow on injured reserve and signed safety Nate Ness. Withrow was not expected to be a factor on the OL this season.

Ness is an undrafted free safety out of Arizona. He had a reputation as a sure tackler and team leader for the Wildcats after transferring from junior college. It’s not likely that he will play for the Seahawks this season, but its possible that he will make the practice squad. He was cut by the Jets and Browns but he may be long term competition for young safeties Courtney Greene and Jamar Adams.

Looking forward this is probably good news for ‘Hawk fans, because it tends to indicate that the team thinks LT stalwart Walter Jones is recovering on schedule from knee surgery. Withrow was depth on the line, cutting him or putting him on IR makes sense because he was never being considered for the 53-man roster. If the ‘Hawks were overly anxious about Jones, they would probably have signed an offensive tackle to replace Withrow, not the young safety Ness. Of course it is still possible that the Seahawks will sign an offensive lineman after teams are forced to cut down from 75 to 53 men.
