Is the Plan to Cut Alexander After June 1st?

Alexander

It’s been an offseason of more questions than answers for the Seahawks and running back Shaun Alexander, as the rumors continue that with the team picking up two name running backs in the past week that Alexander will be shown the door by June 1st. First the team picked up a power back in T.J. Duckett, who signed a five-year deal that will include him looking to grind out the tough yards in short-yardage situations.

Then the team went out and grabbed former Cowboys feature back Julius Jones off the FA market, nabbing him to the tune of four years worth nearly $12 mil. Early word is that Jones will go head-to-head with Alexander for the starting running back spot. That is if Alexander still has a spot on the team when camps kick off.

GM Tim Ruskell has gone on the record of stating that Alexander will be a part of the team in 2008, but by signing two veteran and higher profile backs, it seems that the 2005 MVP’s status is very much in doubt. If Alexander was going to be the feature back again and get most of the carries, why waste the money on a back like Jones?

The Hawks could save themselves $4 mil against the cap with the release of Alexander after June 1st. He is set to earn $4.475 mil in 2008, counting for $6.775 mil against the cap due to his signing bonus. If the team waits till after June 1st to cut him, he’ll count as only $2.3 vs the cap, and the remaining $4.3 mil is delayed till next season, which will allow the team to sign players this season.

Bottom line is the writing is on the wall that despite being an MVP just two seasons ago, Alexander will be looking for work this summer. While he’ll find it with another team, his value has gone way down over the past two years, and getting a fresh start may be his best bet.
