Holmgren, Rhodes, Others to Attend Walsh Funeral

Holmgren

Several members of the Seahawks coaching staff including head coach Mike Holmgren will be absent from practice today as they attend the funeral of former 49’ers coach Bill Walsh. They will all be back for Friday’s practices and then they and the team will travel to San Diego for Sunday’s first preseason game vs the Chargers. Defensive consultant Ray Rhodes, D-line coach Dwaine Board and VP of administration Gary Wright will join Holmgren to attend the funeral. “Those types of things I have been to are both sad and celebratory,” Holmgren said. “You miss the person. Clearly there will be people there who have seen him a lot more than I have seen him the past few years. But at the same time, I was thinking about when my own mom died a couple of years ago (at age 85), and her quality of life was not very good. I was sad, but it was also a celebration. I was relieved in some respects.”

There will be a private ceremony today, and then a public celebration will be held at Candlestick Park to honor the former head coach. Holmgren was an assistant to Walsh from 1986 to 1988. Board was a player under Walsh for 10 years, and Rhodes an assistant to Walsh for eight years. Offensive coordinator Gil Haskell will run the practice today, and defensive coordinator John Marshall will take over for Board.
